Celebrated my birthday with friends and family at Local 16 last night – very nice evening, good tapas, excellent company!
Also, my Brill Building Legends order arrived. It is considered by many to be the Rosetta Stone of the hit making powerhouse, consisting of 57, mostly unreleased tracks and demos. Its awesome to experience the songwriting process in its most raw, intimate form; much of the material consists of Carole King and Gerry Goffin working out what would become classics (and also songs that would never see the light of day) accompanied only by basic piano, drums, and organ. Also, all of King’s 1960’s Dimension solo tracks are assembled for the first time that I know of, as well as rare tracks from Tina Robin, The Honey Bees, The Palisades, and various “unknown” vocalists. Priceless, and also probably illegal (the two-disc set comes from Holland, and the liner noted attribution is a bit suspect – “Your Brill Tone Record Company,” this was pressed in 1995!)
Happy birthday!
