It has been quite cold and it even snowed yesterday. I was hoping it would dump the nasty stuff for today’s Barbarian Invasions and ruin the festivities. But the designated area for the horses are the streets surrounding my building; it would break my heart to see them suffer through inclement weather. And it has warmed up and the skies have been clear all day. Its actually been delightful watching the horses outside my window since early this morning; they have actually been trotting around in circle formations for well over an hour now – dunno what’s up with that. The horse shit is out of control too – I hope its gets cleaned up.
We’ve been more than slightly inconvenienced lately; the inaugural parade starts right by building and the planning committee has occupied the building across from us for several months. We had to arrange – submitting our vital information for background checks - in advance with the Feds to come to work today; all of the non-essential employees are out but we have to stay on the air as always. It was a pain getting into the building, which occupies a whole city block. Streets are closed off even to pedestrians and I was forced to take a roundabout and logic-defying route to get to work. However, my experience today hasn’t been as bad as I anticipated. I made sure I caught the Metro early so as not to deal with the clueless – in more ways than one – masses failing to use common sense on public transit while making their pilgrimage. And, yes, I have seen a disproportionate amount of limos, red ties, cowboy hats, and fur coats this week – a very vulgar display I must say. This morning was tolerable but I’m dreading making way home this afternoon. Especially when the mood in this town is quite colonial - overwhelmingly punch-drunk with GOP fanaticism. And I’m not in a celebrating mood. This city voted something like 91% Blue and I suppose this week is Red payback.
That’s the thing about being a DC resident – our daily lives are constantly being invaded by these mass gatherings. And I’m not just talking about Republicans – any group that comes here to gather, march, celebrate, or protest disrupts our lives. Out-of-towners don’t seem to respect the people who live and work here. They clog up the transit system and leave huge messes – the litter outside is out of control. One would think that El Presidente would have been gracious enough to thank the city of DC for hosting his party! No class, man.
The horses are cool, though.
