I just got back from a leisurely lunch re-visit to the Isamu Noguchi show the Hirshhorn with a new friend. What an incredible collection – catch it before it closes May 9!
AFI Silver is running an excellent series, Demy's Monde: The World of Jacques Demy through May 12. On the schedule are Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Lola, La Baie des Anges, and Peau d'âne – all of which are well worth seeing on the big screen – especially the gloriously restored print of Cherbourg and the dizzying Bay of Angels – Jeanne Moreau is like an electric eel in that one.
The one one I haven’t seen and I’ve been dying to catch is Model Shop, starring my fave Anouk Aimée. Here is the description:
Disaffected architect Gary Lockwood pursues mysterious Anouk Aimée in Demy's only American film. Notable both as an outsider's look at America (ˆ la Antonioni's ZABRISKIE POINT), and a priceless time capsule of the fashion, sights and sounds of late 1960s Los Angeles (including the psych-rock sounds of Spirit!). Rumor has it Harrison Ford was Demy's first choice for the male lead but was rejected by the studio as lacking commercial appeal.
Absolutely right up my alley! Forget Mother’s Day, catching the Saturday screening of Model Shop is my priority this weekend!
